On the 14th March, our Animal Care Team were delighted to discover that our warthog pair, Hermione and Moja had welcomed three adorable hoglets! The trio have been sexed and we can confirm that we have three boys!

Mum, Hermione arrived from Munster Zoo in 2019, whilst dad Moja, was born here at Colchester Zoological Society in 2014. Back in 2023, they became first time parents to warthog twins; fast forward 2 years and they have just welcomed their fifth litter!

With previous parenting experience, we have no doubt that Hermione will continue doing an amazing job at caring for her three hoglets. In the wild, mother warthogs keep their litter in a burrow for the first 10 days and Hermione is no different, spending most of her day in her nest with her little ones.

The hoglets are doing really well and are staying close together as well as sticking close to mum when they venture out of the nest box. Their personalities are starting to shine through already and the Animal Care Team have already seen that one hoglet is definitely much braver than the other two!

Although the hoglets have only just started coming out of the house to see the big wide world, Dad Moja and their older brothers Dodge, Bentley and Ditch are on hand to keep an eye on them, alongside super star mum, Hermione.

Although warthogs are currently listed as ‘Least Concern’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, they still face a number of threats out in the wild including poaching. Therefore, these arrivals are great news for the conservation of this species.
