On 10th August 2025, we invited visitors to join in with our World Lion Day celebrations to help raise vital funds for CZS to support this magnificent species.
Visitors were able to discover more about lions, their natural history and conservation in the wild, plus of course, our future lion habitat plans at the Zoo. Interactive activities offered the public the opportunity to find out more about cat tongues, compare handprints to predator pawprints and learn about cat whiskers. Visitors could also transform into a roaring lion at the Face Painting Station and purchase their favourite souvenirs including colourful lion sand bottles and sweet treats.

Somewhere 2 Sing
As part of our World Lion Day celebrations, we were joined by local community choir group, Somewhere 2 Sing. During the day they performed popular tunes on the Main Stage to help support these big cats.
In addition, over 200 singers descended on the Zoo for a surprise flashmob to celebrate lion species and our plans for development of a brand new, state-of-the-art, lion habitat. Appearing from all angles, and to the surprise of visitors and animals alike, the public were treated to some amazing harmonies by members of the Somewhere 2 Sing choir, who are about to launch new groups in Colchester and the surrounding towns.
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who was involved, including the talented performers, brilliant videography team, dedicated visitors (who couldn’t resist a boogie) and of course the animals!
