On 6th November 2025, we welcomed male aardvark, Indie, as part of a ESB (European Studbook) breeding recommendation.

Indie is 6 years old and arrived from Shepreth Wildlife Park. Indie has settled into his new home at Aardvark Burrow well and can be seen with resident female, OQ. We hope that Indie will eventually breed with OQ to grow our aardvark family once again. OQ is an experienced mum and welcomed her 12th offspring on 23rd November 2024, who has since been confirmed as female and named Roo.

Aardvarks are currently listed as ‘Least Concern’ on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species. They are easily recognisable by their long snout and pointy ears. Their short, powerful limbs with shovel-shaped claws, make them excellent diggers and in the wild their burrows can be up to 13 metres long!

An aardvark’s tongue is around 30cm long and is used to catch termites and ants. They can eat up to 50,000 insects each night! They are primarily nocturnal, spending most of their day sleeping in their burrow.
