We regret to inform you that it is essential for us to close Rajang’s Forest from 2nd June due to necessary maintenance works.
Back in April 2024, we experienced severe damage to the roof of our indoor orangutan habitat, from a storm which involved winds of up to 50mph. During this time, we were forced to close the orangutan habitat to assess the extent of the damage and make repairs.
Temporary repairs were made in order to reopen the area as soon as possible. However, these repairs were only provisional, and the time has now come to permanently fix the roof of Rajang’s Forest.
This maintenance will involve extensive scaffolding in order to replace the roof. Unfortunately, this will not be a quick fix and is estimated to take around 6 weeks to complete. Therefore, we regret to inform you that it will not be possible to see our trio of orangutans during this time, to ensure the safety of all visitors.
The welfare of our orangutans remains priority during this time and whilst they will remain in their habitat for the duration of the work, they will continue to be closely monitored and cared for by the Animal Care Team.

We deeply apologise for the inconvenience caused as we do appreciate that many visitors enjoy visiting our orangutans but unfortunately, this work is essential and unavoidable. Please note that our Patagonian sea lion tunnel will remain accessible during this time.
Our in house Maintenance Team will be working hard to reopen Rajang’s Forest as soon as possible and it is hoped that we will be able to reopen this area for the beginning of the Summer Holidays.
Be sure to check out our recent redevelopments including our new Capuchin Climb habitat and refurbished Colenso Village walkthrough. Plus, don’t miss visiting our new chimpanzee arrival, Napoleon, who has settled in very well with our troop of females.
We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding whilst this work takes place.
