Ebby and Peru have both experienced the loss of a partner but today they have found companionship in one another.
Ebby, 19, arrived from Germany in 2007 as a juvenile. Over the years, she formed close bonds with several partners, including her most recent partner Mako, until his passing this year. She is one of the easiest penguins to spot, thanks to the large black splotch on her tummy. Peru, 13, joined us from the Czech Republic in 2014, also as a juvenile. He had previously shared his life with Tequila, who sadly passed away this year.
For Humboldt Penguins these relationships can be particularly important. They are known for forming strong, long-lasting bonds and often remain with the same partner for many years. However, when a partner dies or does not return, they can go on to form a new pairing.
What started as a companionship has since developed into something more. They have now formed strong bonds, and the pair are rarely seen apart. They enjoy spending time together in their favourite spot amongst the bamboo or cosying up in their nest box.
For visitors, Ebby and Peru offer a chance to see these relationships developing first hand. Look closely when visiting the Inca Trail and you may notice the pair tucked away together, exploring their surroundings or simply sitting side by side.
These days, wherever you find Ebby, there’s a good chance that Peru is close by.
