Over the last decade, Colchester Zoological Society have supported pioneering research with the EAZA Elephant TAG EEHV Fund, donating £6,000 this year alone to help find and develop a cure for one of the biggest health threats facing young elephants – elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV).
EEHV can cause severe and often fatal illness in elephants with a mortality rate of up to 80% once the infection takes hold. The acute haemorrhagic disease, EEHV-HD, sadly develops in one in every six young Asian elephants. There are also seven known species of the virus, as well as several subspecies, therefore it is imperative to understand the virus and how elephants respond to it, so that preventative measures can be taken, as well as developing treatment for those infected.
A Step in The Right Direction
The latest research shows huge advancements in the development of a vaccine, following a successful safety testing phase. A number of young Asian elephants across European zoos have since been vaccinated as part of ongoing research and nine have developed a clear antibody response against EEHV1A (a subspecies of the virus and the leading cause of most EEHV-HD infections).
The research team are now closely monitoring this group of elephants to understand how long the antibody response will last and crucially whether the vaccination provides immunity against EEHV-HD. Whilst there is still work to be done, the results represent an important milestone in the vital research to protect young elephants.
The Bigger Picture
The research has also highlighted the complexity of EEHV. There are several different subtypes capable of causing the disease, meaning that developing broader protection will be a significant part of future research. Alongside the vaccination programme scientists are investigating potential treatments for elephants that become infected, as well as exploring how antibodies from adult elephants could be used as a preventative measure against the virus. Each discovery brings scientists one step closer to understanding this devastating disease and finding better ways to protect elephants and prevent further loss.
One small step for elephants, one giant leap for conservation.
