This World Elephant Day we are shining the spotlight on our very own gentle giants here at CZS.
Known for their impressive stature, iconic tusks and remarkable memories, elephants are amongst the world’s most extraordinary animals. But what many people don’t realise is that they also play a significant role in keeping ecosystems healthy. In the wild, elephants are nature’s gardeners, helping the grasslands and forests thrive through an incredible process called seed dispersal. Whilst travelling in the wild, elephants eat a wide variety of fruits. Many of the seeds they consume pass safely through their digestive system before being deposited in nutrient rich dung. This gives the seeds the perfect opportunity to germinate, helping new vegetation grow within the area.
Here at CZS, we have been lucky enough to witness this extraordinary process in action.
Earlier this year, our elephants enjoyed pumpkins as part of their enrichment. A few months later our keepers spotted something unexpected – pumpkin seedlings sprouting from the area their dung had been left behind. Fast forward to today and those tiny shoots have sprouted into the elephant’s very own pumpkin patch!
While our pumpkin patch may be a small example, it perfectly demonstrates the important role that elephants play in shaping ecosystems across Africa. Every seed they disperse has the potential to become food or shelter for countless other species.
At CZS, our commitment to conservation extends far beyond the zoo. Since 2010 we have provided support to the Elephant Orphanage Project in Zambia, aiming to protect and safeguard the future of wild elephant populations.
